You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: “I just need to find my motivation.”
Or maybe you’ve said it yourself: “I’d do it if I could just stay motivated.”
But what if I told you that motivation isn’t real? That it’s nothing more than a fleeting feeling that will always let you down when you need it most?
Sounds harsh, right? But stay with me.
The truth is, motivation is just a behaviour—it’s not some magical force that makes things happen. And if you’re waiting for motivation to strike before you take action, you’ll be waiting forever.
So what actually keeps you moving forward, even when you don’t feel like it?
The Myth of Motivation
Let’s get real:
I get people asking me all the time, “Michelle, how do you get so much done? You always seem like you’re on fire!”
I get it—on social media, it might look like I’m crushing goals 24/7, like some productivity queen with unlimited energy.
But let me tell you a secret…
I don’t feel motivated all the time.
Some days, I just want to lie on the couch and watch Netflix. Some days, I don’t feel like showing up, creating content, or running events.
But I still do it.

Not because I’m magically motivated. But because I understand something far more powerful:
Motivation is a Fair-Weather Friend
Motivation is like that one flaky friend you can never rely on. The one who hypes you up but then cancels at the last minute.
One day, motivation is there—pumping you up with excitement, making everything feel easy.
The next day? Gone.
And when you build your success around something that unreliable, what do you think happens?
You stop taking action the moment motivation disappears. You start believing something’s wrong with you.
“If I was really passionate about this, I’d feel more motivated.”
“Maybe this isn’t for me.”
“I just need to find the right mindset…”
Sound familiar?
That’s because most people have been conditioned to believe that motivation is the key to success.
It’s not.
What You Actually Need: Timeless Inspiration
If motivation is unreliable, what should you be focusing on instead?
VALUES.
Your values are the internal compass that drive everything you do. They don’t come and go like motivation—they’re always there, guiding your decisions and actions.
When you align your actions with your deepest values, you don’t need motivation. You don’t need to hype yourself up every morning.
You just do the thing.
Because it’s who you are.
Because it matters to you on a level far deeper than just a fleeting feeling.
The Difference Between Motivation and Values-Driven Action
Let’s say you’re trying to get fit.
If you rely on motivation, you’ll go to the gym when you feel like it. You’ll eat healthy when it’s convenient. You’ll be fired up for the first few weeks, but the moment life gets busy? You’ll stop.
But if you’re driven by your values—let’s say, the value of health, longevity, and energy for your family—you don’t need to feel like it.
You just go.
You just eat well.
Because it’s who you are.
Same action, but one is temporary (motivation) and the other is sustainable (values).
How to Find Your Core Values (and Use Them for Real, Lasting Success)
So how do you stop chasing motivation and start building an unstoppable drive based on your values?
Here’s a simple exercise to get you started:
Ask Yourself: What Matters Most to Me?
Not what society says should matter. Not what your parents or partner think is important.
What truly lights you up inside?
Look at Your Life for Clues
When have you felt the most fulfilled? What were you doing?
When have you felt completely drained? What was missing?
These clues will help you uncover your true values.
Align Your Daily Actions with Your Values
If freedom is a core value, are you structuring your life to create more of it?
If growth is a core value, are you investing in yourself and stepping outside your comfort zone?
If connection is a core value, are you prioritising relationships over busyness?
The more aligned you are with your values, the less you’ll rely on motivation.
Because you won’t need it.
You’ll be driven by something far deeper.
What Happens When You Live in Alignment?
When you start living in alignment with your core values, everything changes:
You stop waiting for motivation and just do the work.
You stop second-guessing yourself because your actions feel right.
You wake up feeling clear, grounded, and inspired.
And the best part?
You no longer need to push yourself. You no longer need to force things to happen.
Your actions become effortless. Because they’re aligned.
